Job Introduction

As a Specialist Teacher Adviser, you would be part of the Vision and Hearing Team, which is based in the Civic Offices in the city centre and is a successful Team within the Inclusion Service.  

We invite applications for Qualified Teacher of the Deaf , we also invite applicants who are Qualified Teachers and who are willing to train as a Teacher of the Deaf funded by Portsmouth City Council.   Successful candidates will be required to sign a formal training contract to confirm their acceptance of the conditions.

 

The Service 

The Vision and Hearing Team is a highly regarded needs led Team within the Inclusion Service which is an integral part of the Education Department. The team comprises of Specialist Teacher Advisers (vision and hearing), Higher Level Teaching Assistant, Digital Accessibility, a Habilitation Specialist for visually impaired pupils, and Communication Support Workers for deaf pupils.    We are a supportive, enthusiastic, and experienced team who are looking forward to welcoming a new member of staff to our team to fulfil an additional Specialist Teacher Adviser post for Visual Impairment.  

 

The Role 

Portsmouth Vision and Hearing Team provides support to children and young people, at home, in pre-schools, schools and colleges and internships, whose sensory impairment has an effect on education, mobility and the ability to live independently. 

Our aim is to maximise the educational opportunities for every individual child and young person, working in partnership with parents and carers, teachers and colleagues in other agencies so that the Children and Young People can achieve their social, emotional and educational potential. 


Responsibilities include: 

  • Identifying and assessing  the needs of deaf children and young people (0-25) in conjunction with other professionals, teachers and parents and in line with the SEND Code of Practice 
  • Providing advice and support to teachers and teaching assistants of deaf pre-school children and pupils with a hearing impairment. 
  • Providing direct intervention/specialist teaching to deaf pre-school children and pupils as required and Monitoring their progress.    
  • Liaising with colleagues from health, social services and voluntary bodies over the needs of deaf children. 
  • Liaising with parents over the educational needs and progress of deaf pupils. 
  • Advising the LA on independent, non-maintained and other LA provision within their area of specialism. 
  • Providing training to teachers, teaching assistants and setting staff. 
  • Attending meetings for the exchange of professional information, including statutory review meeting concerning pupils and multi-agency meetings (Single assessment framework, CIN meetings CP conferences) 
  • Helping to  maintain a specialist equipment library of resources for loan to schools where a deaf pupil is placed. 
  • Advice and support for communicators working with deaf pupils.

The ideal candidate 

You will need to have/be 


  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): You must hold a recognised teaching qualification.
  • Commitment to further study: A willingness to undertake and successfully complete the Mandatory Qualification Teacher of the Deaf is essential.
  • Able to demonstrable extensive experience of working with children or young people in an educational setting, including CYP with special educational needs .
  • Excellent personal organisation and time management skills
  • Working with families and experience of multi-agency working.
  • A good understanding of the principles and practices of Special Educational Needs and Disability is crucial.
  • Experience working with deaf children or young people.
  • Experience of delivering training.
  • A commitment to achieving the best outcomes for deaf children and young people.
  • The ability to work individually and as part of a team (these are equally important in this role).
  • An insight into your own behaviour and the ability to reflect on practice (in individual and group situations with clients and colleagues).
  • Able to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills
  • A current driver’s license and have access to a car. An essential car user parking permit and a mileage allowance is available.
